Right it's not like I don't see some some similarities between Zuko/Mako and Bolin/Sokka but I see enough major differences that make them their own characters.
As someone else pointed out Bolin could even be a young Iroh like character. And Mako also has some similarities with Mai (he's way more composed than Zuko). That being said I think as we watch more of the series we will stop seeing them in terms of characters of the previous series and start seeing them as Mako & Bolin. I like them both and don't have a favorite, I just can't wait to see how their interaction grows with Korra.
I also really like Korra. She's very different from Aang (almost the opposite in some ways) but that will make for a fun series with very different types of conflicts.
Of the other characters I think Tenzin & his oldest daughter are my faves.
I think it's really unfair to compare characters of a sequel series with the original characters, in general. Even when they follow similar tropes or can be summarized with the same two words like I just did, if they're well written like in this case they'll be a total different entity with their own set of qualities and flaws. And I'm really glad that Bryke see it like this too, because it's a nextgen badfic way to shoehorn them so the old fans like them. I already see everyone as their own person now, at least.
I'm not sold on Mako yet, but it's only been one episode of him. I didn't like Sokka on his first episode, or Zuko for some episodes, so he'll probably grow on me. I've liked Bolin since promo art and trailers though, as he's the kind of character I normally dig, and yet I was pleasantly surprised he behaved a bit differently to the way I thought he would.
I think a lot of people identified with Jinora XD Asking about Ursa, bookworm, "I will not make such promises." She's my favorite of the three airbrats.
I wonder too! I heard there are novels about Chagum's side but the two translated here are Balsa's. Considering how much it sucked to find them, I doubt they'll edit the rest.
I started watching Legend of Korra even though I haven't finished A:TLA yet, heh. I'm not sure if that was a wise decision but everyone was talking about it everywhere and I didn't want to fall behind. And I don't want to rush through TLA just for the sake of it either; I'd rather take my time with it and watch both series parallelly instead. But anyway, I liked the first two episodes. Korra is great so far and I like the other characters too even though it's a little too early to tell with some of them yet.
It must be interesting to watch them at the same time! A friend was happy because it looks like she could recced it to people who never watched ATLA. In any case, if you ever get confused about something that looks like a Last Airbender reference, I'd be glad to explain ^^
I wound up jumping in to Legend of Korra before I finished Avatar (I've been spoiled for most of the end though) and I'm glad I did. It's going to be interesting watching both shows in parallel. I love Korra, and Tenzin, and Tenzin's family, and kind of everyone right now, LOL.
