I definitely lose interest in a job faster when I feel like I'm not doing something for the greater good. Working in journalism, I felt I was doing a community service, so even when some of my working conditions and job politics were shitty, I felt good about what I was doing. I moved to a corporate job where I liked the pay and time off but eventually just became totally disgruntled because I felt if I was making any contribution, it was a negative one- helping heartless megacorps. become bigger and more profitable.

I'm in journalism again, and I'm conflicted. I work part-time for a business-to-business publication and don't always agree with the subtle politics of what goes on the opinion page, but it's balanced for me by the fact that we do a LOT of reporting on alternative energies and green building practices.

Eh, just kind of babbling at this point, but whether my job is contributing to the greater good is *definitely* something I think about.
