odd reoccurring concept...a few semesters ago, a girl in one of my sociolinguistics class asked the our professor, "is it true that the chinese have no concept of sarcasm?" to her i once again say ha...

two movie reviews: :
300: centers on sparta, the original red state...and the battle of thermopylae...as told by frank miller...as opposed to herodotus...if you have a cursory knowledge of ancient greece...the historical inaccuracies stand out like a corinthian in thebes...while "sin city" featured extended sequences of topless gyrating strippers wielding automatic weaponry...300 panders more towards the parts of the population who might enjoy staring at 300 sets of well-toned abs...fight scenes were cool...slow motion over used...gerald butler is actually pretty awesome as leonides...they stick to the graphic novel fairly faithfully...but added lots of clichéd scenes to make the movie longer...and a subplot involving leonides wife gorgo that i generally found to be offensive...on the whole...movie was decent...
last life in the universe (ruang rak noi nid mahasan): thai film, cinematography by christoper doyle of 2046/in the mood for love fame...i was disappointed by this movie...although admittedly i first took interest in it mostly cuz i really liked the cover...the reviews on imdb were good so i figured i'd check it out...basically...a suicidal, obsessive-compulsive japanese librarian dude named keji who lives in a meticulously organized apartment meets quirky, free-spirited thai chick named noi who lives in a cluttered hovel and goes on pot-induced hallucinations...through a series of tragedies that occur in the first half hour of the movie, they strike up some sorta pseudo romance...i think...movie has lots of pretty sequences that are touching to watch...but the movie's exploration of the whole "is life worth living" deal doesn't really bring anything new to the table and the characters...especially kenji...seem to lack internal logic...also two pivotal scenes in the movie that are basically ruined by something gross happening...still...the dvd cover is sexy as fuck...

in the civic center station the other day...this girl came up to me...slightly shorter than me...heavy set of dreadlocks, calm eyes, dark skin and a tattoo of a woman's face on her back...she said she needed a dollar so that she could get home...if she hadn't been so emaciated....she would have reminded me of someone i used to know...i gave her a dollar...

the 100 most viewed pages on wikipedia for the month of march...discounting the main page, the battle of thermopylae is the most visited page on wikipedia...after that its mostly a disturbing mix of sexually explicit content, 9th grade level western history, anime and bad american tv shows...wikipedia is simply the internet on a slightly smaller scale...created in the hopes of becoming a useful network of information, used instead as a means for lonely people to feign intellect and ogle pictures of no-talent musical acts and fellatio...

for the past two weeks i ended up working overnight shifts at work...which worked out well financially for me but mostly just left me exhausted...life takes on a surreal dreamlike quality after you've spent enough time awake...and for a euphoric moment you feel like you understand the universe...
