SPEC
She's an antisocial weirdo genius. He's a buttoned-up former elite with a low tolerance for wacky. Together, they INVESTIGATE PARANORMAL CRIME!
I'd really like to know how they dreamed up this drama. Well, aside from being a spinoff of the 90s version. I just really would've loved to be in that board meeting.
"Buddy cops?"
"Nah."
"Buddy cops who are total opposites?"
"You know, that's never been done before and I can certainly see the appeal, but it's still not enough."
"Okay... how about mismatched buddy cops who fight criminals WITH SUPERPOWERS?"
"Oooooooh."
"Mind-readers and psychics and murderers!"
"WITH GUNS!"
"THE BUDDY COPS WILL HAVE LOTS OF SEXUAL TENSION! WILL THEY? WON'T THEY? YOU NEVER KNOW!"
"GENIUS!"
This is Toma.
Toma is a weird, lazy, spacey oddball who doesn't give a fuck about appearances... or boundaries... or social norms. IT'S EVEN MORE AWESOME THAN IT SOUNDS. She dresses the same way every day. She never brushes her hair. She has a rolling suitcase she takes everywhere, even in the middle of a chase scene. She confronts dangerous criminals while picking her nose.
Using her sling for a table try. I LOVE HER.
She gets away with her behavior because she's a fucking genius. She's hyper-observant and her brain can process things in a snap, helped in part by weird rituals that are never actually explained. (What's she doing? Does she live in her office? Is that a patio chair? Don't worry about it. That's just how Toma rolls.)
Her weirdo act lasts as long as it takes to get the criminal exactly where she wants them... and then she starts smirking. And laying out every excruciating detail of how they fucked up.
Because she saw everything.
THE SMILE THAT MEANS SHE HAS YOU EXACTLY WHERE SHE WANTS YOU.
If you see any of these faces, you're already fucked.
This is Sebumi, her partner in crime(...fighting). Sebumi is a stoic, ex-special forces badass who was actually demoted into her unit, so you think he'd be very serious and irritable, right?
Well, you're right. But also? HOT.
Sebumi is one of those stealth hotties. At first he's just a cranky weird-looking dude, but then you realize he's a hardcore ally and BAMF. Literally, he shoots like three people in the first four episodes alone. He throws himself between Toma and bullets. If competence is hot, then Sebumi's smart, sexy vigilance is like sex honey poured right into your eyeballs.
AND HE'S A TOTAL DORK. He can try to hide it, but Toma knows. Toma sees all.
Here he is climbing on chairs just to deliver his message from on high.
THE LOOK ON HIS FACE. THE SIDE-EYE. LOLOLOL.
Toma lugs her suitcase everywhere. Eventually, Sebumi is so attuned to her that when they're in a hurry, he GRABS IT FOR HER and takes off running. They're in each other's phones as "Gyoza Woman" and "Brawny Idiot."
Sometimes, pairings are so OTP you don't even need to say it.
As mentioned, they don't fight just any crime. It's supernatural crime. Specifically, crimes committed by those with special abilities -- also known as SPECs.
Toma LIVES for this stuff. It's the only time we see her truly animated, when she has something disturbing and/or unexplainable to investigate. "OOH, SOMEONE WAS POSSESSED? LET'S GO!"
Some might say her priorities are skewed...
...but the truth is that she actually has a vendetta. And yes, it relates to her sling. The most hilarious part? It has nothing to do with the big mystery.
There's this whole conspiracy, see. Unexplained disappearances. Killer SPECs. Secret units within the police force. And Toma doesn't even spare them a thought. She has her own problems.
Any other plucky police girl would be rushing headfirst into danger for TRUTH! and JUSTICE!
Toma? Toma doesn't give a fuck.
Other major players, including Shirota Yuu, Fukuda Saki, AND KAMIKI RYONOSUKE THE SERIAL KILLER.
I thought he was hot. I thought he was hot. I knew he looked familiar, but I just assumed I'd seen him in high school dramas or something. Then I looked him up and he's KAMIKI RYUNOSUKE. The boy I've been watching in dramas since he was like eight.
I AM A DIRTY OLD WOMAN. I AM THE WOODY ALLEN OF JAPANESE BOYS. LOOK AT THE WAY HE POPS HIS COLLAR. *CRAWLS IN A CORNER TO DIE*
Basically, this drama is for anyone who enjoys a good crime story with awesome characters and some truly jaw-dropping plot twists. Think of it as BOSS mixed with Untouchable and the crazier parts of A Sleeping Forest.
YOU ALSO GET TOMA, WHO IS WORTH SIX DRAMAS ON HER OWN. TOOOOOMA. TOOOOOOOOOMAAAAAAAAAA. ♥ ♥ ♥
