Author’s note: Written for the fic challenge, with the prompt How Will came by his buckle shoes from veronica_rich

Will Turner had never owned anything brand new and especially nothing made specifically for him. Everything he ever had, whether it be a shirt or stockings, had either belonged to someone else or been intended for someone else before it came into his possession.

It was no surprise to the blacksmith’s apprentice when the clothes his master provided him each year on his birthday came from the tailor’s back room and used as reference designs before their highly discounted sale to Mister John Brown. Granted, the two shirts, two pairs of breeches and four pairs of stockings were of better quality and condition than the clothes his mother was able to procure for him. Even though Will was grateful for everything he had, part of him wished there was a way for him to have something that belonged to him and only him.

So, it was a shock to Will the afternoon of his seventeenth birthday when a box arrived at the smithy addressed to him. The box was not as much of a surprise as the gift inside - a brand new, polished pair of shoes with a shining brass buckle.

They were ridiculous. What was an apprentice like him to do with such a pretentious pair of shoes? He needed boots to help protect his legs from hot ash, not shoes that barely covered his feet.

Will continued to steam over why someone would spend that large amount of money on shoes for him that he could never get the proper amount of use out of when he noticed the card attached.

I thought you might need something to wear when visiting customers’ homes.

Happy Birthday, Will.

~ Elizabeth Swann

Seeing those words, Will relaxed to even smile. The smooth curve of the governor’s daughter’s hand captivated him and it was as his fingers tentatively slid along the E, the shop door opened.
