My Quest for Compassion

Mar 19, 2009 14:44

My greatest challenge of late is becoming more tolerant of intolerance. I find it very difficult to deal with groups that rely on exclusion or judgment of others to build themselves up. I want to develop more compassion for people who spend more time trying to limit the choices and actions of others than to really understand their own choices and ( Read more... )

I do not understand how important a Louis Vutton handbag it but if somebody could explain I would be curious.

It's incredibly important if your self-image is completely dependent on what others think of you. For more practical and self-assured people, a handbag bought at Goodwill for five bucks is a lot more sensible.

The interesting thing about some people into labels?

They don't know how to carry it.

I've seen people who buy nice suits and other clothing made out of the same fabrics by the hands of some of the same tailors, only without the label who get it and carry themselves better than those just seeking out labels.

There's a lot to be said about confidence and research when dressing. I lot little traditions, and I've seen people in affordable clothing who pay attention to those traditions who look so much better than the label fiends.

I work with a guy who wears a fair amount of Louis Vuitton stuff, but he does a double Windsor knot and leaves out the dimple in the fabric, instead of a four in hand knot with a proper little dimple in the fabric.

I may need help because I notice little things like that, but wearing even cheap things right versus just wearing a label for the sake of the label says a lot about a person if fashion is such an important thing to them.

You'll find this coincidence amusing (well, maybe) -- I'm reading Natsuo Kirino's REAL WORLD and one of the characters just mentioned carrying a Louis Vuitton bag.

I have worked as a seamstress, so I do appreciate good fabrics and materials. I agree with cgrolund on this. A good tailor can hook you up for a lot less AND it will fit and drape better. I have a Coach handbag myself. I paid $175 for it at the outlet store. It has lasted me many years and it does not have a logo all over it. My issue is not with quality. It is with importance and exclusion.

The girl who said that spent $1,200 on the bag and buys a new one each month. I think she wanted validation on her purchase that failed to fill her with the sense of purpose as she expected it to do.

I've never cared for labels. I look at the materials and look as opposed to who made it because honestly, the label's on the inside (not including t-shirts with "Ambercrombe & Fitch" or "Aerospatale" (Funny story, I though that originally said Aerospatiale and thought it was really cool because that was where my Dad used to work and took me flying.)

Anyway, paying for a label always struck me as silly.

I also have developed an involuntary response when people validate their purchase because of it's label to roll my eyes.

Doesn't Aéropostale mean "air mail". I mean WTF?
