I think I've been given the world's most useless corporate freebie. As far as I can tell, one end goes into a USB port and the other end converts into various mobile phone adapters, I can only assume for charging. The point is - this thing is pretty much the same size and weight as a phone charger. Why would anyone want or need to carry such a ( Read more... )

Technically, the reason for those is for the pedantic corporate buildings that actually obey the HSE directive that states only anything that has been tested by the official electrical safety people for the companya nd is marked with an appropriate certificate may be plugged into the mains (therefore all personal stuff must either be tested&marked, or more commonly, banned).

It's a bit crap, then - my USB to phone charger is a lot smaller than the wall charger. It also plugs into my laptop in foreign countries.
The USB bit, apart from the HSE pedantry mentioned above, also doesn't need to plug into a socket that might be inaccessible - a lot of phone chargers won't plug into a floor box with sockets in it because the floor box has insufficient depth for that and crushes the charger.
