Hell, I can't imagine that punishment works at all without the talking-to; mostly all I ever learned from being punished was that my parents were jerks.
Oh, sure, they'd say "You're being punished because you did [blah], and you shouldn't DO [blah]!"...but the reason WHY one shouldn't do [blah] usually amounted to "Because I said so." Young Kate's conclusion? "My parents are selfish jerks who want everything their way!" If the reasoning had actually made sense to me, I might have agreed never to do [blah] again...but ever so rarely was I reasoned with, which only made me more unreasonable.
