Sony has since actually agreed to make a statement about this. In it, they refute claims that they're not going to allow a used game market. However, there is a patent on file by the head of the Sony entertainment division for a technology that allows the reading and subsequent erasure of a key code on a disk.
(Rewritable technology? Write once use of "that sector is now unreadable, no really, nothing to read there, hey! cut that out! Stop! or I'll say stop again, only louder!")

So much rampant speculation surrounds all this stuff.
I would suspect that it is a new process to create a new blu-ray rental system. There has been a product (DVD) that when exposed to air will cease to function after about 4 days. This was to be a new form of rental system whereby movies could be "rented" from any store, and you would not need to return them (just make sure you don't pause the movie part-way through and then forget about it for a few days...).

I remember they tried something called DIVX (not to be confused with the MP4 compression scheme) that allowed you to purchase a specially encoded DVD disk for ~$5. A special DIVX player would play it for a few days. I can't remember if it required online access to contact special servers that maintained records of all movies you watched and had purchased. Then, if you liked the movie, the player would ask you to "purchase" the right to play the movie in perpetuity on that player
( ... )

DIVX did indeed require it to talk to a central server. They had a few levels of subscription after the initial period. You could pay per view, go for Silver which let you watch it whenever, and go for Gold which would let you play it on your friend's DIVX player as well.

Right.
What they're doing is just encouraging piracy and/or a "black market" for used games/keys...
Idiots.
