Hmmm?

So this fall I am planning on going to Sheridan. I've gotten into residence, my fees are all paid up, and I'm excited and a bit nervous to be out on my own, learning new things, and seeing just how much pressure I can take before losing my mind. Thing is, my boss seems to really want to keep me here. I've been offered a raise and a permanent ( Read more... )

If you can afford to do that, go for it.

I'd kill for a job like that, though. : )

In the art world, professionals tell me time and time again that the degree, while it will help in a few situations, isn't as important as the portfolio itself. AND the work experience. That's going to help you a LOT.

By the way, NEVER underestimate a good book for learning the sort of things that you seem to seek. I'm not going to lie.. I've discovered a LOT about color, technique, composition, etc through books.

But I did really enjoy the college environment, too. Interacting with the other students was FUN. It made me feel more confident about my work and how to present it, and it was wonderful to meet other artists. : )

I've also heard some horror stories as well. Is it possible that you could still go back to your old job, if the good 'ol college experience isn't as good as it should be? I mean, from what I gather, the job you have now is what (some) artists go to college for in the first place. To GET a job like yours. :3

Good luck!!

Thanks for the input! Yeah, I was thinking about the portfolio stuff. The giant sculptures probably would look pretty damn good. My boss was saying originally that he'd hire me in a second if I came back from my 4-year degree program early, but he sounds like he's getting pretty desperate. The REALLY talented/knowledgeable guy in the department is going back to school for his Illustration/Character Design program so they'd be needing someone immediately. I do crave the college experience, living away from home, meeting new people and all that, but lately I've been wondering if animation is specifically what I want to do. I'm having so much fun designing these characters, going back to a world of timing charts and dopesheets is starting to hold less and less appeal. Then there's the money aspect, my boss has said he'd pay me back whatever I've already lost in terms of application fees and such if I stayed on this year. I just feel kinda superstitious about the whole thing. I mean, after 4 years of coveting Sheridan's animation program ( ... )

If you are lucky enough to be able to afford school, you should go for it.

There is a lot of things to consider in this situation, and I'm sure you've been back and forth through all of it. Here's a couple of pennies from my corner ( ... )
