It could be a lot of reasons. Maybe it's a little bit too early to be hanging out in real life. Maybe they're paranoid about internet stalkers. I wouldn't worry about it too much. If the time comes, just take it in stride.

This is someone that I met through a friend in high school, and I've hung out with on numerous occasions.

Well if they don't seem to hang out with you, stop trying and just stick to talking online.

I don't really need another online friend... it's more that I feel like I've been cut off, put in the backseat. If I'm gonna just stick to being an online friend, then I don't think I'm gonna bother being friends at all. That's the dilemma.

It may all come down to paranoia. If it gets too annoying to convince them might as well leave it.

Maybe he's worried that you're gay?
...nah, that's too high school-ish.

Just show up at his door sometime. I do that to Elise from time to time, and while she never comes with me, I still "hang out" with her, persay.

Oh. Bring your girlfriend then. Maybe she thinks you're hitting on her... are you? ARE YOU?!

If my girlfriend wasn't 1,000 miles away, that'd be an idea.
