i'm trying to push towards a mixture of my usual style and a bit of realism with faces. it's going alright, but i know i have "ideal" looks for both male and females that i'm having trouble moving from. i would like to show more variety with my characters, especially when it comes to ethnicity!

Same here. I want to have more range, and not always fall back on the tenants of "anime style" that I developed over the 10+ previous years. I've been taking figure-drawing class, which helps.

best of luck with your studies too =) i don't think there's anything wrong with the anime style per se, in fact i still enjoy it and others seem to doa great job with it. but! it's always good to try and push yourself. and great to hear about the figure drawing class! i wish i had access to one currently T Tb

My style is still pretty "anime-influenced," which I'm fine with, though I'd like to have a certain amount of range so that my art doesn't have to look so cartoon-y if I want to go for a different work in certain pieces. But there are some elements considered normal in anime-style art that I'd prefer to eliminate from my own work. Like every female or male character having the same body-type and facial features, (besides possibly the size/shape of their eyes,) and generally trying to stylize features and anatomy without a solid foundation. Basically, stuff that's not so good in any style of artwork (anime or no).

Figure drawing is a lot of fun, though. :) I started it to get more life-drawing put together in my portfolio and apply to art school, but I liked the class and the teacher so much I've started going back for another session.

definitely! i too want to have a bit of range when it comes to what i work on =) cartoony stuff is very fun to work in, i would just love to try and do more work that's rendered with more detail and somewhat realistic. i definitely admire artists who are able to go back and forth with their styles to fit their projects!

yeah, i think for me, it's much easier to vary my male characters than my females... i really want to work on that.

and that is great to hear =) keep at it! i don't have access to life drawing classes, but i ought to do more life drawings when i go out to the city.

I'd have to say that I have gone through some of the same issues with drawing. such as the lack of variety in my characters and attempting to make them all racially correct instead of flopping on the the anime style in comfort.

Its difficult :

Not seeing your hand posture, I imagine the way you've trained yourself to get the control you have is through mashing your HAND into the page, not the PENCIL. There's really nothing more than constant, conscious effort to break the habit that's going to help. At the same time, you'll probably do well in finding an incentive (besides avoiding rehab and injury) to use a newer technique.

Take out references to hand control and insert terms for applying different styles and methods for ethnicity and design and there you go.

my posture is definitely an issue, i know i have to stop drawing right at my computer table and go to my art desk with the elevated work space. and you're absolutely right, i need to be more conscious about what i'm doing while i draw... i think because i tend to have music on and the tv, i just get lost during the whole drawing process and i let myself push my hand too hard.

and yeah, i'm trying to study other artists and how they tackle ethnicity and whatnot =) i hope with more practice, that i can get there.

Concentrate, there is unfortunatly no other way. You are in a routine/ or habbit if you want to call it like that. And the only way of going away from that is beeing consious while drawing, this is something I´d recommend to any artist anyway.

The thing with your wrist/hand can be avoided by short workouts for 5 or even 10 minutes every hour ( some stretching and mild training for your arms... I also find out actual handwriting helps somehow, don´t ask why D8 ) ... or every second hour, you have to test a bit around to find out your personal preferences.
I never had any kind of wrist problems thanks to this mini training, despite of sitting on the computer the whole day .

Other than that i hope you are having fun :)

yeah =) i absolutely need to concentrate more during drawing. i think far too often when i try new things i slowly go back to what's comfortable for me and i end up just drawing the same thing because it's easy to me. i definitely need to push myself more!

and thanks for the tips! i used to do hand stretches a while back but admittedly stopped doing them in recent months, ugh. my fear is getting carpal tunnel, but so far it seems to just be the side of my hand that's been bothering me. i'll try to take more breaks and be aware of how i'm pressing down =)

it has been pretty fun! in the past i would get far more disappointed when i found that i haven't really progressed much. i try to tell myself now that it's going to be a slow process hehe.

I bought some cheap flexband for stretch exercise, its also good for my shoulders ( lol seriously, others have hand problems, i have it in my shoulders, they just get stiff after sitting for too long XD )
I´d personally recommend a small aplication like "time out" that reminds you whe to do breaks.... it super effective and you don´t have to worry about not noticing when its time again :D

I´m also glad how you manage things, people always want quick results but forget that everyone is different and needs different methods to learn they it suits them best :/

thats a great idea! i actually work out, so i have my excercise bands that i could use more often to just work out my wrist/hand. i'm trying to be more aware of how much time i'm staring at a computer or doodling away as well =)

and thank you =) though admittedly, i've only recently started to be more patient with myself and art in general. i definitely don't want to go back to old habits of feeling defeated if i don't understand a technique!

yeah =) i plan to have a cartoony style as well as this one i'm trying to work on. i don't want to completely abandon the other stuff i've done. i actually admire artists who seem to be able to be flexible in their styles; adjusting it accordingly to fit whatever project they are on. i love that!

and oh man i know! i have a callus on my middle finger that just sticks out. and thank you for your concern =) yeah i'm really afraid of that, so i'm going to make more of a conscious effort to avoid straining myself!
