Forgot to commiserate with you over the basement flooding. Ours was doing that for awhile - turned out to be a combination of (a) the pipe under the sink in the kitchen disconnecting (really, why should it be loose like that? doesn't make sense to me) and (b) the pantyhose attached to the hose emptying the water from the washer into the set tub wasn't anchored and was plugging up the drain, thus leading to water overflowing from the set tub onto the floor.

In the end, I was glad I hadn't called Sears to come fix the washer, which we just bought in November. Sometimes procrastination is the best answer.
