Time

How do you guys do it? I need some advice regarding how to manage time. So, we're all pretty busy, and I figure I'm just like everyone else here. But here's my schedule:

1) Get up 6.15, to leave house by 7am.

2) See patients from 730a - 330 / 4p. (usually through lunch as well - I eat while someone's waiting to see me). At the end of the day I will still have anywhere from 45min-2hrs of charts to complete.

3) If I don't work out, I can get home around 430p or 5ish. Make dinner for everyone, eat, and get kids brushed and into bed by 8ish.

4) Do charts from 8ish until about 10p - 1030p.

5) Some free time from 1030p-11p, but I need to *rush* to bed so I get enough sleep. My job, like yours, isn't one I can do sleep deprived.

If I go work out or if my wife has clients in the evening, it pushes everything back a bit and I may have charts that need to be completed the next day. Sometimes the backlog gets pushed to the weekend.

6) Wife works in some capacity every Saturday (and many Sundays), leaving me with two kids (and work that I need to catch up on) most of the day. Will take kids to gym every Saturday morning, but the rest of the day is juggling screaming / fighting kids (whom I do NOT want to just put in front of the TV all day obviously) with needing to get my work done so I can have at least Sunday to relax.

Even when the kids are getting along well and doing activities, it is not uninterrupted time for me. As anyone who has kids (who can walk) know, kids "doing activities" are really kids who interrupt you every few minutes to show you something, ask you to get something, or tattle on the other kid. So, charts I could knock out in ~2hrs uninterrupted take 4-5 hrs with kids frequently interrupting.

If I'm lucky, all work is done by Saturday. That leaves me with Sunday, which can be great and very restful.

I love my job. I feel challenged, appreciated, valued and have a great deal of autonomy. I love my patients, I love the medicine and I adore my coworkers. I'm really glad I'm employed.

Blah I don't even want to post this, I feel like I'm whining and I don't mean to be. I just....I want to know how you guys manage your time. A little part of me is secretly hoping someone will tell me that I'm unusual and many folks aren't as crunched for time as I am, but I figure at least some of you will have a similar schedule to mine.

In other news, it was difficult explaining the 9/11 stuff to Sara today (as we watched it on TV this morning). And Cori just would not stay quiet during our moments of silence. One day they'll understand. It's all very sad and I'm incredibly grateful to be living and in good health.

Speaking of my kids, here's a video of my older one telling a few jokes:

My favorite part of this video is after the jokes, when she tells me how she got them. Her manner cracks me up. Then how she goes completely blank and walks away, haha.
