I woke up today, the first day of spring, to hear a mockingbird singing car alarms outside. First time this year, and such perfect timing! Happy Equinox, everybody, the time for warmth and flowers is once again upon us!

I love the car alarm mockingbirds, they seem to think it's so much more impressive than mimicking other birds.

I remember this one nature special (Discovery Channel? Animal Planet? I dunno.) that was set in a rain forest - there was this bright green bird that created unique songs of imitated sounds for its mating call, and this one in particular trilled its little beak open and shut and perfectly imitated the sound of a camera shutter. I was shocked speechless (and you know how hard that is...) for a good five minutes, before I started yelling, "Holy shit! HOLY SHIT!" for... well, the next five hours.

It stills stuns me, thinking about it. Holy crap. Nature. *boggles*

I just love how creative nature gets in the name of trying to impress potential mates. "Look at me, I've got such a good memory I can imitate all these different things! *goes off on a feathery tangent*"

Birds are fantastic pets! So pretty and clever, and if you pick the right species and are a good birdy parent and aren't terribly unlucky, they'll be with you way longer than cats would. ~:>
