Because Sheldon subscribes to the alternate universe theory.

The creation of this universe goes as such:

Penny sits on Sheldon and Leonard’s couch with her feet resting on Sheldon’s spot. He’s in the kitchen making himself a sandwich. They’ve just finished watching the last Doctor Who episode with David Tennant.

This is really important, so pay attention.

“I think,” Penny says, “if all of that was possible, I would be Rose Tyler. I have the hair and style for it.”

“You’re most likely right. The Doctor’s companions are all meant to be pleasing to the eye, and according to western culture, you’re very pretty. And you act like Rose,” Sheldon replies without looking up as he cuts his food in half.

“And Leonard would definitely be Mickey Smith. There’s no doubt in my mind,” Penny adds with a nod.

“I’ll indulge you. Who, Penny, would be the doctor,” Sheldon asks.

Penny just looks up at him with large eyes and a small but knowing smile. “That’s a stupid question.”

Sheldon glowers. “You know that there are no such things as stupid questions unless they come from Wolowitz.”

“Well, I didn’t think it even needed asking,” Penny says, grinning.

She rises on the couch so she’s resting on her knees and peering over the back. Her chin rests on her elbows as she watches her Moonpie add just the correct amount of chips onto the plate.

“I wouldn’t have asked if it went without saying, Penny.”

He knows the answer to the question. She knows that he knows the answer because it really does go without saying.

“Well, I can’t say that you act much like the Doctor, but if I had to cast the role, I’d choose you. David Tennant is kind of foxy though.”

Sheldon smiles. Even though he’s turned away, Penny knows he is. She can just tell.

“I appreciate the allusion to ‘New Earth’,” he says as he returns to the couch. Penny moves from his spot quickly.

“I thought you would.”

She can’t help but think of that time she quoted Yoda to Leonard. Inwardly, Penny grimaces. This is different, though. He’s different. They’re different. Well, there’s actually no ‘them’, but there will be. Her psychic told her so, and who was she to mess with fate?

“If I may, I believe that Wolowitz would be Captain Jack,” Sheldon adds.

“What about Raj?”

Sheldon thinks for a moment. “K-9.”

“I like it,” Penny giggles. And she adds as an afterthought, “I have the daleks all figured out- Leslie Winkle, Barry Krypke, and Wil Wheaton.”

He stares at her in awe with the sandwich almost reaching his mouth. “I may have just fallen in love with you, Penny.”

Sheldon jokes sometimes now- the kind that make people other than himself laugh. And get this, he’s good at it. Except that one. That last joke makes Penny’s heart ache and soar at the same time.

“Who could blame you, Moonpie? I’m freaking Rose Tyler, and you’re the freaking Doctor. It’s written in the stars, sweetie.”

“Contrary to what you’ve seen in the Disney adaptation of Hercules, nothing is actually written in the stars, Penny,” he replies.

Penny smiles and looks out the window absentmindedly and thinks of the best thing ever. “Hey, Sheldon?”

“Yes?”

“Can my car be the TARDIS?”

“Absolutely not."

She stills smiles.

They’re cute, aren’t they? The next chapter will actually feature Sheldon and Penny as the Doctor and his companion.
