In this article about gas prices in Beverly Hills, one local explains her fuel conservation strategy while filling up her Escalade at $4.299 a gallon at a local full-service gas station:

I bet even money the stupid idiot was blonde too. Uh, saying "You'd have to be rich to drive to work" when you own a CADILLAC Escalade, one of the most expensive gas-guzzling SUVs on the market. Sheesh, that woman probably wouldn't be able to figure out her gas mileage if it wasn't for the computer on her car. If she really was so worried about it, she'd trade in her "luxury" vehicle for something a bit more conservative, like a hybrid Camry. Stupid people.

I shudder to think what will happen to my personal finances if my current consulting contract ends and I have to find a real job with a real commute again...

...In any case, I'll have something like a carolla or a civic, so I'll feel somewhat vindicated versus that chick.

I'm fond of Corollas myself. Mine's eleven years old and still gets 30 miles per gallon. It would probably do even better if I ever got around to cleaning out my back seat and trunk. Right now I've got a four-door two-seater.

Sounds like you've stolen my hubby's Carolla - but his is a 1991 which managed to take 4 cross-country road trips and endure 14 years in San Francisco and still hasn't died of sheer exhaustion...
