Note: For the prompt Cowboy Bebop, Faye Valentine, And the song goes on... at the Awesome Ladies Ficathon commentfic portion. I discovered the ficathon entirely too late, but this prompt called me. I know I have too many of these lately, but the good news is, I'm going on vacation soon, so you'll be spared from me ;)

She left in the middle of the night some time ago. Took off in the Redtail and never looked back. It was a familiar routine, a small comfort to fall back on.

The only place she could return to had become the only place she couldn’t stay. It was filled with the memory of him at every corner. She could see him everywhere. That unnervingly calm resolve in his eyes that only an idiot with a death wish could have perpetually haunted her. She could hear that final gunshot salute ringing painfully in her ears at every waking moment, singing a dissonant song of heartbreak and anguish.

Six bullets. Six desperate attempts to halt the inevitable. Six failures. Fired blindly into the ceiling, lost forever.

It would never be the same again. That was why she had to go.

She doesn’t know why she ended up here, of all places. A souvenir of another life and time, tucked on a cold, remote world on the edge of civilized space. Every inch of it brings back memories she’s not sure she wants to remember. There’s a lot of that these days.

She sighs heavily and sits down at the bar, that sense of déjà vu only becoming stronger and stronger. The customers come and go, each one shadier than the next. The cocktail she orders burns all the way down her throat, stiff and crude. There’s a man playing a saxophone where another once stood, its harrowing tune resonating from wall to wall.

But the song’s not the same. Nothing is anymore.

Yet it goes on.
