PICTURE POST: a visit to michigan and chicago
sunrise in the airport. my good pal todd was nice enough to drop me off at the airport at 5:30am so i could catch my flight to chicago. thanks todd.
first chicago stop, brunch. with my newly acquired non-vegan status, brunch is easier and admittedly more fun.
we went back to daniel's place, which he had just moved into. it's not in a part of town that a lot of our friend's live in, which was kind of refreshing in a weird way.
he lives in the west loop in a sort of industrial area. the train goes right by his place which was a little weird to get used to.
daniel had been scheduled to do a shoot for time magazine so we had originally planned for D to pick me up at the airport and we would drive straight there. however, time canceled a few days before my trip, so we were about to unwind and make fun plans for the day. then, of course, time called and asked if we could still go. so it was a crazy scramble to get everything ready and drive to indiana semi-unexpectedly.
this is daniel's roommate bouchard's dog, igon. he was pretty lovely.
this was supposed to be a pretty easy shoot to assist for since he was just assigned to do landscape of notre dame college. i was mostly just there to help carry around stuff, switch out lens, and occasionally take a light reading (unlike the dwell shoot which was a lot of stuff with strobe lights and two solid days of being on my feet). the shoot ended up being slightly miserable because it started downpouring and didn't stop for two days.
because of this, we couldn't get a lot of stuff and had to crash at a hotel overnight and hope for good morning light. the fun part about that is expenses are paid by the magazine so we stayed somewhere sort of swanky, even though we went to bed at midnight and had to wake up at 5am for the light.
after finishing up the next morning, we drove to my small town in michigan and sat around waiting for film to be processed so d could turn it around to the editors really fast. we got lunch with my dad and his wife, sue. this is at a small town ice cream parlor in paw paw that randomly started having a lot of vegan/vegetarian food options.
we also went swimming at my dad's house.
it was still overcast but it made all the greens really saturated, which is one of my favorite things.
we drove in to kalamazoo to pick up the film and then met my mom for coffee
then we drove back to paw paw
and got lunch at this little bistro with a really good chef. daniel commented that for a tiny town, we had a lot of surprisingly thriving independent business. i had never really given it much thought but it's true.
this is the extent of paw paw's "downtown"
the little movie theatre we would go to every sunday night growing up, because it was only a $1.50 to see movies.
the following day we met up with my two oldest friends, merry and katie. we've been best friends since we were five (katie and merry have been friends for even longer! since they were 2 or something).
they brought their s.o's and we all got lunch before our other friend's wedding.
it was our friend frances' wedding. she's another one of our oldest friends, since 4th grade when she moved to paw paw.
katie and frances
the last of our best friend 'crew' is erin, she was a bridesmaid in the wedding.
mine and katie and merry's mom's. whenever we all get together, we make our mom's pose together too... haha.
between the wedding and the reception, daniel and i went to thrift stores in my town. unlike big cities thrift stores where mostly everything is picked through, you can almost always make solid finds in the tiny town ones. daniel pulled out a big stack of records, at least 20 of them - michael jackson, cat stevens, the beach boys, rolling stones, etc all for a dollar each.
then it was time for the reception
merry and her boyfriend tim. they live on the west coast so we don't get to see them often. it's always the best when merry comes to town. merry and i were partners in crime for everything growing up - people always thought we were sisters or twins.
D will never make a serious face for photos =0(
our moms again, this time with erin's mom too.
it's a very longstanding joke that frances is a klutz. she proved herself by accidentally hitting the ceiling twice when throwing the bouquet.
our "crew," that's what we always called ourselves growing up.
katie, caught in the coat room with merry's boyfriend. scandal.
and again
katie and frances' grandpa
i love erin's hair in this, and that d is singing
there was also a photobooth set up, which was super fun! this is me and my momma
and my two oldest friends, merry and katie
and of course, me and daniel
on our way out of town the following day, we swung by my sister, rachel's house, to say hello and see my nephews. this is asher, gettin big. he has a huge head!
driving into chicago was a pretty epic sight. that skyline has been iconic to me since i was young. in high school, since i lived in a rural town, we would always drive the 2.5 hours to either detroit or chicago for shows. through college, i would visit daniel when he was home on breaks, and visit friends who had moved to chicago, and of course, finally it was the skyline that i called home for a little bit.
our first stop was for coffee from our favorite snobby coffee joint, caffe streets.
we caught bouchard as he was headed out for work, lookin all fly.
daniel's minimal room aesthetic. if i learned from anyone how to be pristine and organized, it's from living with this guy for a few years.
i pretty much just wandered around and went to draw at the wormhole, a coffeeshop, while daniel and everyone else was at work. when he got home, we went to my old gym! it was really nice to see everyone, and to work out in a huge space again. my new gym is smalll. it was funny because people at my old gym kept talking about how it was cramped that day with ten people. haha WHAT.
that night i went over to leslie's and it was so nice to see that gal. i miss her so much! leslie was my chicago partner in crime. she was my very first friend there and it stuck the entire time i lived there.
we made our typical walk down north avenue to get food and caught up on all sorts of things.
her house was getting some really nice light
sarah came over and we watched the worst rom com ever. it wasn't even funny bad, it was just bad. but the food and the company were good so it didn't matter.
leslie found out that bri z. was in town on tour so we swung over and caught up with her for a little bit outside of panchos. randomly seeing people in different cities is pretty great. i also got a copy of her new zine!
tuesday morning i surprised my old nanny boys. it was so nice seeing them again. i miss those dudes every day!
i started watching rishi just after he learned to walk when he was 13 months old. now he flies around the house like a little monster. for some reason, he learned how to put his shirt over his head and thought it was the best thing. he's about to turn three.
ravi's favorite is still playing peek a boo in the curtains
my friend lisa took over as their nanny so it was great to hang out with all of them and see her again too!
rishi is still crazy about the color pink. pink sunglasses and pink crocs. cutest.
cookie monsters
after that i drove up lake shore drive and suddenly wanted to live in chicago again. that lake was my favorite thing about chicago hands down. so many people i know in chicago never even go there! but i rode my bike to the beach straight from work several times a week.
boats <3
a lot of people are surprised when i tell them that there's a beach in chicago. actually there's something like 33 beaches right in the city of chicago! the whole 30 miles of shoreline is parks or sandy beach.
i met up with matt and leslie who were both with their nanny kids. i had been planning to go to the beach to draw anyway, so it was fun to get to hang out with them while their kids kept each other occupied.
i used to have playdates with leslie all the time. rishi and ari were best friends by the time i moved.
matt's nephew, who he's mannying for every day this summer.
towel hugs are the best
also ari is just extremely cute. she's vegan!
i went home and went to the gym again, then we went to a different beach for sunset with a bunch of buddies
it was really nice to catch up with everyone and ben horns was in town visiting too.
afterwards we all went out for pizza and ate on the patio. outdoor dining is a staple activity for chicago summer hangs.
wednesday was my last real day. i met up with leslie and ari again where i saw ari with raccoon eyes. apparently ari had been squinting so hard the day before, her big cheeks bunched up and left a big area under her eyes to go uncovered by sunblock. whoops.
a picnic with some of my favorite chicago gals.
that night i went out to dinner at irazu with matt, richardnj and daniel. matt and richard are two dudes i know i'll see around from time to time simply because of punk and because they're both from the philly area originally. dinner consisted of a big conversation about punk and diy and $10 house shows.
we rounded out the night with drawing/reading at caffe streets and i left the following day.
it was the perfect length for a trip back to chicago. low key, super relaxing, and really nice to see a lot of folks. i only wish i had gone to a show maybe so i could have seen a handful of people that i didn't wanna bother individually.
