That's what gets me about the games many politicians play: it's not about the common good, it's about making them look good. It's about power.
LOL, your government's argument is ironic, since the US media persuaded some of us to think President Bush caused 9/11. (Everyone loves a conspiracy theory, and you don't even have to prove it's true! After all, if we don't believe it, as the saying goes, "that's just what they want you to think.")
For all the damage that the media can cause, however, you're absolutely right. Censorship is not the answer. If their ideas are stupid, they can be dismantled with logic; if folks buy into the ideas by not thinking critically, they'll reap what they sow. But the minute government throws its weight around and suppresses this free exchange of ideas, it disregards human dignity and becomes tyrannical.
Thanks for not censoring yourself. Behold the joys of blogging!
Yay! (But of course you are! I find it really awesome that you cared to comment on this politcal rant, and even more so since you're neither a Filipino nor live in the Philippines.)
I know, right? This is why politics has such a negative image-to the point where even some people consider not caring about politics to be a good thing. This is why a lot of highly qualified people, who are filled with good intentions, refuse to work in government. I can't help but sigh at the sorry state of our bureaucracy; I feel my idealism slowly dying because of these politicians. What's worse is that family dynasties are very much prevalent in my country. It's a sick, vicious cycle. . . .
Really? I didn't know that. The argument used by one senator (Sen. Joker Arroyo) was that terrorism wouldn't succeed if the media didn't cover it, citing 9/11 as an example. I thought, What?! Whatever he said afterward all started to become a joke to me-what a way to live up to his name, indeed
