Thoughts after reading the news

It must really be hard for the family of soldiers who died in Iraq when they finally realize that their sons or daughters died for a lie.

That must be why so many of them hold on to their illusions so tightly.

Hence why maybe mocking them, even though you're not intentionally doing so, but many posts do, isn't good.

Besides, you've got them wrong, anyway. Because their sons or daughters didn't join up for a cause, or if they did, they are mistaken. They signed up for a job most of us can't handle - to do what we're told, right or wrong, and don't ask questions. Just do.

It's better than you or I could do. We would bitch - and die.

But what a mighty bitching I would engage in before I poured my life's blood out on the sands. ;)

It would be epic bitching.

Gilgamesh and Elric would have nothing on me.

Anyway, I'm not talking about the soldiers. The soldiers probably know the truth of the matter quite clearly. Being close to the dying like that is highly enlightening, I've heard. It's the people at home who I'm talking about. They're the ones who have turned this into something righteous so that they can get peace of mind.

Not all of them, of course, but enough of them. Their illusions make discourse difficult.

when the hell is war righteous?

I think the closest we've come to a righteous war is World War II. The defeat of Hitler uncovered (and stopped) the evil of the concentration camps, and Japan's loss ended their campaigns of cruelty.

Of course, much of this evil wasn't uncovered until after the war, so....

I may be naive, but I don't get the dying for a lie part...

Well, the original reason for going over to Iraq was because we were in eminent danger of being nuked by them. Turns out there were no nukes, just lots of oil. (remember the war in iraq has nothing to do with 9-11. All of those men involved in that were from Saudi-Arabia)

The reasons we've been fighting the war have changed so many times that I'm forgetting what the current one is now. Every time it's revealed that Saddam didn't really have nukes or chemical weapons or a good tailor, we find another reason to have been there. He was a bad man. It's all for democracy.

Of course, now almost as many Iraqis have died due to our own bombing of their cities as died when Saddam was dictator. And democracy seems to be going out the window as well, especially women's rights. In fact, women may have have had more rights under Saddam than they will under the new (conservatively religiously dominated) government.

There is no doubt in my mind that WMD were being made in Iraq. If you read the reports about how inspections were made, and have some idea about how the militant groups and government worked prior to the war you can see the gaping holes that would allow them to do so. Additionally, I'm sure if the hand were stretched far enough, the operation would be found in a bordering country. I mean, keep in mind, we are talking about the same ruling party who used WMD on villages in their own country to test them ( ... )
