There's a drop down button at the bottom of the page when you're drafting the post. You can choose public, private or friends only.

Also, if you want to create different filters you can do that, too. If you want I'll show you how the next time we're both near a computer...

Currently I can only get into LJ from my iTouch. Which doesn't let me filterentires. :(
