“Turn off the tv, Andrea.” She rarely follows his orders, but he pleads.
Her breath catches; she realizes that he’s apologizing, over and over: to her, to the kids, for calling her at all, and she doesn’t understand until he slows down.
“I couldn’t let you hear it on tv.” His voice is hushed, and she speaks just as softly, trying not to let him hear the tears.
“I’m coming over.” It’s non-negotiable, and when she arrives with their children, she wraps him in her arms. She can’t fix this, but she can be the last person he has left.
