'One that is acted on and usu. adversely affected by a force or agent [the schools are victims of the social system]: as a (1): one that is injured, destroyed, or sacrificed under any of various conditions [a victim of cancer] [a victim of the auto crash] [a murder victim] (2): one that is subjected to oppression, hardship, or mistreatment [a frequent victim of political attacks] b: one that is tricked or duped [a con man's victim]'
It's always good to be clear on the terms. And that's about as far as I buy into the whole victimology thing. Call me hard hearted but in my dictionary, 'victim' is synonymous with 'sympathy'. Which is something I suppose my cold heart is lacking. Well, in a few cases, at least.
After all, most victims aren't made, they create themselves. It's not what happens to you but what you do after. How you chose to react. Bad things, no matter how terrible they may be, are a part of life. Whether you decide to spend the rest of your life living that day, that time over and over is up to you. Or you can appreciate the fact that hey, you're alive and get the hell on with it. I know that's not very PC but let's face it, it makes just a little bit of sense.
Now I know we're supposed to talk about it, work through it, face the issues together, see the light, feel the feelings and share our progress with the group each week. To put it mildly, screw me gently with a chainsaw. If there's one thing that's worse than victim it's survivor. I'm a survivor of childhood abuse! I'm a survivor of drug abuse! I'm a survivor of alcohol addiction! I'm a survivor of bad relationships! Congratu-fucking-lations, you haven't hauled yourself off a building yet, when will you be available to collect your big shiny medal?
Claiming survival when you're simply continuing to exist doesn't automatically equal strength. Harping on to anyone who will listen and hold your hand doesn't mean you're getting over it. It's self-indulgence and excuses. If that's your thing, at least have the decency to write a song or poem about your unimaginable pain so you can make something that may be beautiful out of it. Or at least not as self-righteous and irritating.
Now let's all breathe, focus and think about what we'll bring to group next session.
