Doom 3 and the teenager noise

So back in the day I played Doom 3 when it came out. Decently cool game at the time, but one thing drove me up the wall. At the end of one of the 7 or so footstep noises for the game, there is a very distinctive "click" noise. So whenever you are walking somewhere, you hear the CLICK-CLICK-CLICK ... CLICK CLICK and it drove me crazy enough that I ( Read more... )

I can hear the audio test, but the only high-pitched thing I hear in the Doom clip sounds like a sneaker scuffing on pavement. I remember some Metafilter/Fark/Digg thread where a ton of people over 30 were saying they could still hear the so-called "teenager" audio file.

Yeah I think the test might produce different sounds on different rigs. I tried with Guy and Eric and Guy could hear it at a low volume and Eric could barely hear it out of one ear (or something like that). So some of those people might have been hearing the noise at a lower volume than others; they just didn't have a reference point.

As for the clicking, it's hard to tell if it's hearing range or not. To me, it sounds completely unnatural and not like any footstep whatsoever. Others hear it and are not bothered at all. Do they have a radically different opinion of what walking should sound like, or are they actually hearing a different noise?

Some of my coworkers and I had a good discussion about hearing range. That sound is ok, you need to find a site that does a range, like 15khz to 20khz. My hearing tops out at about 15khz now, which makes me kindof sad. I heard some occasional clicking in the video, not sure if it was what you were talking about though, but it didn't bother me. If you were annoyed by it though I could see it getting old real fast.
