And when is it that you decide that you need deep thought and exerted thinking? Only when you decide you need to change yourself in a large way, which comes from a painful experience. Or you can be "woken up" by pain, and then later realize you need to think deeply and exert your thoughts. Either way pain is involved.
explanation: I went through a lot of pain the last year, because of one person. and I let myself because I was really stupid, and naive. But Now I get it, and I realize I can't let that happen to myself, therefore "There is no coming to consciousness without pain." ahah!
you'd be suprised. a lot of people do not get it. and I used to not get it, because nothing like that ever happened to me, until last year. I was brand new at it.
yep, it's pretty hard to understand something you've never felt before. but on the upside it made me want to be a better person. I think in the long run it was for the best.

sometimes it just takes pain to wake you up.
but, any strong emotion can do take you to consciousness.
and sometimes, no emotion is needed, just deep thought and exerted thinking.
