Hm, I think I would have been put off of anime if the first one I saw had a boy hallucinating/his guts falling out.

I think the only reason I wasn't totally put off was because of an unclear understanding of the terms. I thought that the movie I saw was called "Anime" for a while and that any other animated thing from Japan was just called "Japanese Animation". Then later I learned that anime was just another term for Japanese animation and thus my confusion over the movie was born.
