I really need to read more cummings. His poetry is always surprising. I remember Rob posted one a while back that I hadn't read either. Thanks for posting this.

I remember reciting this one for an 11th grade English class. My teacher -- who was utterly incompetent to teach AP English in any respect, but was married to the principal -- struggled quite visibly with trying to decide if this crossed the lines of moral acceptability for a high-school class.

Ultimately, she wisely decided to let to slide.

I remember some controversy about Shakespeare's sonnet #135 as being a little to pun filled for high school students. It seems to me more literature such as the cummings poem and Shakespeare being bawdy might do a little more for bored high school students love of lit!

I am glad the teacher let it slide too! Good for you.

You're welcome. He's a favorite of mine too. His themes and concepts may not be the most complex, but he can be really fun to read.

I was assigned to do a report on cummings in 9th grade English. Everyone was jealous of me because I had the most fun with the poems.
