In the documentary The Corporation, several scenes are dedicated to the concept of undercover marketing - average people getting paid to talk about consumer products to their friends or to stand on street corners and have fake conversations so that people will get the impression that the items are good, cool, and exciting.  I found it slightly ( Read more... )

Do you know what I think it is? It's more noticeable with macs because they have such specific names. I mean, no one says "I love my new Dell 3KK90" or whatever. Or "my Toshiba Osmosisoi". Cos, of course, when you say "I love my new pc" no one knows what the hell kind of computer it could possibly be. Macbook just says it all in one go.

Great point. Next time I buy something I'm going to make my facebook status "I love my Canon Wonderpic Dwarf 36012XN".

I was drinking Loblaws No-Name coffee (mixed with President's Choice Espresso) when I read this, and it was so funny that I accidently spit coffee on my Ikea Umlaut desk and HP flat panel monitor. I totally think you are not being paranoid. (If you are feeling paranoid, though, I can personally recommend that you ask your health care provider about "parylax". Many of my friends use it and find that it removes their anxieties very effectively.)
