I'm trying to figure out how to write a job search letter and have no idea what I'm doing. Even all the examples I have aren't helping. I think that's fundamentally because I don't know what kind of job I really want. If I apply for a lit job I'll almost necessarily be leaving behind creative writing, which means I need to leave that out of my ( Read more... )

I don't see that you have to leave anything out, even if you are changing direction. It's something you did, and it will have transferable skills. It might even be something they are looking for.

If it's spelled right, and goes to the right address, you should be fine. I've seen the recruitment process from the other side, and that's what gets letters junked in the first round - spelling, and whether they have the right qualifications. If you get past that, your letter has done its job

I don't think it's possible to do job apps without a crisis of identity. For me just thinking about what kind of job I might want (and hence should work towards qualifications for) throws me in a tailspin of confusion and despair.

I would keep the creative stuff in... just to keep the page full, if nothing else!! I think a lot/most English programs would be glad to have someone who could teach both creative and lit crit stuff.
