In 2006 I rushed to finish my novel by an arbitrary deadline, and managed to make it (as far as the Pacific Time Zone would have been concerned). But my novel suffered, and soon thereafter I set it aside, wanting to revise it rather than try to publish it right away ( Read more... )

It's interesting - I just yesterday had someone at work ask me how the writing was going, and just that much got me to start talking about what my novel was about (the new one I haven't finished, not the older one that needs a whole lot of rewrite), and got me excited about fixing it up. Just explaining it, geeking out to my own work, helped recover some of that verve.
That work has been pretty dull the past 2 days hasn't hurt. It makes it very easy to put forth imaginings and consider them.

For me, guilt is a strong motivator. I felt I had no right going to Brazil and trying to impress a lady if I hadn't already finished my novel. I ended up being about 10 pages shy of finishing my novel when I left to Brazil, but then Gabi wonderfully told me that the first thing I needed to do when I got back to the states was 'finish the fucking novel ( ... )
