Today I went to a Comic Con in Suntec City, Singapore, that lasted from June 27 - 29, 2008.
The con itself was nothing much to talk about, except that it was crowded, small, and lacking in the particulars I'm interested in -- such as good, honest, amateur works that spring from the fan community itself and not from profit-oriented groups, a.k.a professional artistes making more money by selling their autographs there, with a book or two in addition. The cosplays were sub-standard as well in quantity and quality, so I have no pictures to share. They did have several hotshots in the industry featured in the glam, most notably Gary Erskine, comic artist, and Shinichiro Katai, creator of the DEVILROBOTS (which IMHO an unimaginative creation, if there's ever one), but I did not manage to get a glimpse of these people. Eh, no loss there.
The highlight of the day was the purchase of Inoue Takehiko's illustrated works for his phenomenal Vagabond series, "Water" and "Sumi" at SGD 19.90 a volume (of 164 pages), which came down to USD 27.30 in whole. I was planning to buy only one of them, but the boothkeeper, sensing my indecision, quickly stepped up and brought two samples of both works out and showed them to me. I flipped over the pages and less than a minute later my mind was made up. There's no way I could buy only one of them since they're clearly meant to be appreciated together. They're still in their plastic covers -- I'm planning on bringing them back to Jakarta when there's a chance. I think I trembled a bit when I saw the pictures.
Hm, some images from the con I took with cell phone (hence, the horrible quality):
My family is a big fan of Master Q, if you can't tell, and I was quite disappointed when Joseph Wong Chak, the creator himself, who was supposed to come to the convention didn't manage to do so. C'est la vie!
And that ends my report. I really need to get back into the game. *sigh*
