You can get them used, but most of the time they are close to the 100K mark where you lose coverage on the hybrid parts. (Yeah, I don't want to pay for that.) Not to mention the fact that economically the Corolla/Echo are the sweet spot price per MPG. They are very cheap to run. Basically it would take years to make up the difference in price. Thats what I like about the Toyota/Honda small cars is that they actually get another 10 mpg over the US makers, and that makes them really cheap to run.
My parents looked at it, but couldn't justify a Prius. Even then I still get into the problem with the fact that until you hit 5 years old Toyotas really hold their value well. Average retail for a 2003 Corolla LE with average milage is 11K, where as a new one will cost you a little more than 14K.
