Etymological curiosity...

So I'm having a conversation and I send an AIM *hug* to zja2 and I start thinking about hugging. Not just the act (I'm more intrigued by the act kissing) but the word. It's such an odd word. I can understand why hugging means what it does, but not why it's called a 'hug'. So I turned to "Encarta's Online Dictionary".

The etymology of a hug... )

That's not etymology! incarnate June 19 2002, 10:40:26 UTC
Where's the history! Where's the drama! Where's the violent norse words invading the warm southern coast of england in longboats with the spiky little helmets? Running around burning english dictionaries to the ground killing our male nouns and raping all of our female gendered nouns ( Have you ever wondered why all English' nouns are neuter? All of the male ones are dead, and the female ones have gone into hiding for fear of the foreign invaders )
