That's pretty awesome. I hadn't heard anything about this venture.

The old 1/3 scale DC-X prototype demonstrated vertical takeoff and landing quite some time ago. It was a prototype for a single-stage-to-orbit spacecraft, and was never itself intended to go very high, but certainly made great landings.
