I haven't read it, and I'm sure I really want to. I read where some officials did apparently talk to Harper Lee, and determined that yes, she wanted the book published. But, given her age, and all of the various accusations going around, I have to wonder if she really and truly is on board with it. Or even if her mind is in 2015 with her body ( ... )

It's not a terrible novel, I want to be fair, but yes, it does read like an idea that was perhaps best abandoned. It seems like To Kill a MockingBird is the polished version. Essentially its a lengthy lecture on how racism is wrong in a setting where a 25-28 year old woman seems to have no idea that her family has some dark undercurrents. With some really interesting omissions - Jem, who is dead, is never ever discussed as sharing in the family views at all.

I have to agree that I question whether Harper Lee really understood what was being asked of her.

Frankly it's like Jean-Louise just realized she was raised in Alabama.

It'll sneak up on you.

Seriously, she didn't know her entire family endorsed racism...

I kind of want to say, "Well she is a woman," but that somehow feels...wrong?

I have it but the library only gave me seven days. I'm returning it today unread.

I'll try and read it later! Gregory Peck and the movie will always stand as movies too. But I want to see what Harper Lee wrote.

These 'found' books? I have low expectations. The Dr. Seuss book ended weirdly!
