More often than you might believe, I sit down to write out the hows and whys regarding my becoming a devout member of the Word of Faith. I get bogged down with the intricacies. How on earth does a supposedly intelligent woman start to believe that questioning a man is akin to doing harm to God's prophet? It all boils down to that right there.

As somebody who grew up in the very different but equally extreme religious environment of Christian Science, it's been interesting to see the journey of a fellow former-extremist into something else.

This is a great little personal essay that you've written - do you read Slacktivist or his literary and theological criticism of LaHaye and Jenkins' Left Behind series? Based on your essay here, I think you'd really enjoy his work.

I always enjoy when you write about these experiences because I know that once upon a time we were drinking the same flavor kool-aid. And now we've both given it up. But I tell ya, sometimes I do wish the world was as easy as Joel Osteen makes it out to be.
