The psych minor in me kicked in when I read this. I'm thinking that what's gone on with your heart has made you feel like it's something that you have no control over, so you subconsciously feel the need to compensate for that. So, you try to exert control in areas of your life that you CAN control... whether you should or not (and that is something that could be debated. I don't have an answer to that). Anyway, that's the input of what basically amounts to an hypothesis of an armchair psychologist. Take it with a grain of salt. :)
Maybe the surgery (and very real possibility of not being around anymore) has helped you uh, make peace? with Death. If you're not afraid of death, what's a boss or a drunk idiot really gonna do to you? ;) Now you're like a kamikaze pilot or something. I think maybe you wanted something to happen with the drunk guy because at that moment, that drunk guy represented all who prey on the weak. Maybe one of your friends told the large guy your name?
