Greggory Maguire has some great twisted fairy tale books - Wicked is about the Wicked Witch of the West's side of the story told in Wizard of Oz, The Ugly Stepsister is the Cinderella story, etc.

If you want good Fantasy with a female bent, try Mercedes Lackey. Her books are very well written and not the typical fantasy type of book. Oathbound and Oathbreakers have a goddess-y bent, The Fairy Godmother is another book of hers, in her 100 kingdoms series, which was really good. She writes a whole series about "Velgarth" of which Oathbreakers and Oathbound are a part. I highly recommend any of her works.

LOVED Wicked. It was one of my favorite reads from last year. I am working on Mirror, Mirror currently. His stuff, while great, is a hard read I think. There is something about his style which makes his books more heavy reading than people wanted for the summer.

I run hot and cold on Lackey. But I will check out the Oath ones.

If you are looking for a great fairy tale, you MUST read THE PRINCESS BRIDE by William Goldman. It leaves all fairy tales behind because it is so amazing; it has adventure, action, romance, comedy, and just a touch of fantasy. The plot moves at a steady pace and the characters are funny.
