The Parts of a Marriage

In this post, I will not be discussing my moral stance on gay marriage, because I don't think it's relevant.

I believe a marriage has two distinct components:
1) the legal side, a civil contract entitling both people to certain privileges (being considered next of kin) and giving them certain responsibilities (child support, covering each others' ( Read more... )

I...I like this! I've been so worn down by everyone making commentaries and hashing the same subject that I almost didn't read it. But thank you. Thank you for a refreshing, logical, "Gee, why didn't anyone think of that?" solution to a very real problem.

The problem is that the people arguing against gay marriage can't seem to separate the two halves. They wish to lay claim on the term 'marriage,' being their religious institution, AND on the legal aspects of marriage, as if those are somehow a sacred part of the religious institution of marriage. They don't seem to completely understand that a church is NOT NECESSARY for a wedding to take place, and hasn't been for some time. I'd like to look up the percentage of marriages that take place in courthouses and never step foot in a church, but I'm too tired to do so right now. I bet the number is fairly high.
