I am so depressed about comments. Not comments on my livejournal. Comments that people leave on random news articles on the internet. I think I have been overestimating the intelligence of people all my life. I suppose I have been living in bubbles this whole time. Born in the suburbs, moved to Austin and Olympia, both highly literate state ( Read more... )

good god I love your entries.

and we were just discussing this topic at work the other day, since our website now has online articles/commenting. Our web guy was bragging about the quality of comments on our site as opposed to the statesmans comments, which apparently tend to run a little more like the ones you've described here.

Oh man, the Statesman has some doozies. But those rile me up for a totally separate reason: conservative venting. Its just filled with people who hate rail, hate toll roads, hate bicycles, and get this... hate traffic! It makes no sense.

I was just thinking about the same thing today! I watched a funny video on YouTube and there were about 1000 retarded comments that did not necessarily relate to the film clip. It was really annoying.

Anyway, this reminds me when I was about 15 and using the internet regularly for the first time. I would go into message boards/chat rooms and all that would go on would be a bunch of dumb-ass teenagers trying to sound knowledgeable while talking shit to one another. It is amazing how the power of anonymity gives these fuck-heads the idea that they can post ridiculous comments that do nothing more than waste space.

What is that old adage: If you don't have anything nice to say than don't say anything at all?

People need to think before they speak/type.

The majority of people are basically dogs with credit cards. Take for example the recent Russian/Georgian clash. I saw some commenting Americans confused because they live in (the state of)Georgia and don't see any tanks. It's sadly not just America..I think it's due to the system we live in and how apathetic it makes us..couple that apathy with the common "I don't give a fuck!" attitude/hours of tv time and you have a common human being in 2008. I sometimes think I overestimate the stupidity of the majority but then it is proven over and over how I am actually underestimating it.

definitely the worst comments are on music-related things. the best comments on youtube are the ones under the videos depicting super-cute pets doing cutesy things. look for "spudgy". awwwwww.

the Youtube ones are bad because I never know what bands they are talking about. There will be a clip from some artist, say Black Sabbath, and then there will be hundreds of kids posting about how they are ripping off some modern band that just came out this year. But I never know any of these new bands at all. I've never even heard their names. That's how old I am getting. And all the names sound like "Ashes Orbiting Mars" or "Psalms for Black Ophelia."
