Sometimes they wouldn't see each other for weeks, though they had technically been living together the past six months. It was heavily into concert season, long days of practice, performance, and reception. Ohtori would often get home late into the night -- early morning, really, sometimes to the point where he knew Hiyoshi would wake in only a couple hours more. On his way back he would sometimes entertain the idea of staying up to at least be able to have breakfast with his roommate, but as soon as he returned he was always too exhausted to do anything other than collapse in bed.
Most nights this was not worthy of note, until he over aimed and went through the wrong door. He didn't notice his mistake at first. It was dark, and neither of them were prone to overly obvious decoration, and after a point his actions started to run on instinct. Tie and jacket were discarded by the door, shirt untucked and unbuttoned as his leg bumped against the edge of the bed. He pulled back the covers and settled down heavily, laying on one side, noting an unusual warmth as he shifted over and then --
"I know it's been a while since we spent time together, but isn't this a bit drastic?" Hiyoshi's tone was wry and quiet, though loud in the pervasive silence of the room.
Startled, Ohtori sat up and blinked in the darkness, realization not quite penetrating as fast as he would have liked. "Hiyoshi?" he asked, almost in disbelief. Not that it could reasonably be anyone else, but he hadn't anticipated the bed to be occupied to begin with.
An exasperated sigh, he could all but see the other rolling his eyes. "You come into my room at -" here he paused to check the clock "-nearly four in the morning, do you really have to ask?"
"Ah, sorry!" Ohtori could feel his face flush, ears gone hot with embarrassment. "I thought this was my room." When Hiyoshi didn't say anything, he continued, "Only, you know, I was wrong." Way to state the obvious, he chastised himself mentally.
For a moment, Ohtori thought Hiyoshi had decided to ignore him and go back to sleep, though this struck him as odd. From their school days, Hiyoshi had always seemed to have trouble falling asleep when anyone else was around. Mostly observation from overnight class trips and excursions with the team -- though Shishido and Gakuto arguing about who got which bed, with Oshitari subtly egging them on, hardly facilitated a peaceful environment. Still, there always seemed to be something about Hiyoshi that was set on edge when there were other people around, a natural defense mechanism that over the years became better concealed but was present more often than not.
He knew he should leave, he had entered uninvited, unintended, however -- his thoughts were interrupted by the deadpan reply, "Doors can be tricky like that."
Internal rambling came to a halt. He chuckled quietly, rueful. "Evidently." He smoothed Hiyoshi's comforter around his knees, fingers tracing along the neat stitching. "At least there aren't any glass ones to crash through. Wasn't that how the story went? With the music student." It had been years since he had read any of the Seven School Mysteries, but a few had tried the test of time and stuck with him, if fragmented.
"Yes. And I'd rather not have you haunting all the windows." Hiyoshi sounded bemused, though not quite annoyed. Yet. "Are you planning to stay the night?"
"No, actually." He wondered where his mind was, and it answered that he should stop prolonging the inevitable, whether the bed was his or not. "I'll be going now." He tossed aside the covers and started to get up; he'd have to get his discarded garments in the morning. His limbs proved uncooperative, though, tired muscles not wanting to function after even the slight respite, tangling in the sheets as he tried to stand.
Hiyoshi still hadn't moved aside from slight adjustment as Ohtori made a mess of his bed. At least, that's what it felt like he was doing. Perfectly even, Hiyoshi pointed out, "I didn't say you couldn't."
That stilled his movement. Surprised, Ohtori stared at Hiyoshi's back in the darkness. He could barely make out the outline of Hiyoshi's form, the curve of his spine and hunched shoulders. "What?"
With pointed patience, Hiyoshi seemed to weigh his words before voicing them. "Just get some rest, Ohtori. You seem really out of it." There seemed a purposeful flatness present that made Ohtori suspect Hiyoshi was either concerned, or trying his best to not kick him onto the floor. Most likely a combination of both. "Besides, if you fall asleep in the hallway I might trip over you in the morning."
"I... all right." Ohtori settled back down into place, this time taking more care as he rearranged the covers to what he hoped was an acceptable condition.
Laying on his back he gazed up at the darkened ceiling. His thoughts slowed with his heart beat until they were heavy with sleep and a vague lingering to years ago and the last time he had shared a room with his friend. Proximity that neither of them were used to, but Ohtori found after the initial unease that he felt calmer than he had in quite some time. "Good night, Hiyoshi."
He received no reply, and tried to stay on his side of the bed. Two hours later when Hiyoshi rose to go for his morning run, Ohtori rolled into the imprint left by the other's sleeping form and buried his face in Hiyoshi's pillow.
