Hermione stood in the entrance of the church, waiting for the music to change so she could go in.
So far the day had gone to plan. There had been no problems with neither her dress nor the bridesmaid’s, and no one had come to say that they couldn't find Sirius.
That had been Hermione's biggest worry.
It wasn't because the witch thought that he would leave her at the altar. No, it was because he’d had his stag party the night before.
The last stag party the men had been to was George’s, and they had somehow lost him during the night. None of them knew where he was the next morning, when he should have been getting ready for the ceremony. They had eventually found him in one of the Leaky Cauldron’s rooms an hour before he was due at the church.
It had been a very near miss. Hermione dreaded that the same thing would happen with Sirius, even though it was obvious that the men had learnt their lesson as there had been no word from them to say otherwise.
“Are you ready, princess?” her father asked, holding his arm out for her to take.
“As I will ever be,” Hermione replied nervously.
“You don’t have to do this if you don’t want to. I am sure Sirius would understand,” he said gently.
“I want to do this, dad. I love Sirius, and he’s the only man I’ll ever want. It’s just...I’m nervous about walking down the aisle in front of everyone. I've never liked being the centre of attention,” Hermione said, linking her arm in his.
“You will be fine, Hermione. When everyone looks at you walking down the aisle focus on Sirius, and focus on what today is all about; the two of you committing yourselves to each other for the rest of your lives.”
The music changed to Wagner’s traditional wedding march, and they entered the church. The congregation stood, facing towards them, but all Hermione could see was Harry trying to persuade Sirius to look forward.
Somehow, Hermione didn’t think that that would last very long.
The sight of her fiancé was all Hermione needed to calm her nerves, and it took all the strength she had not to run down the aisle to him. Instead, she kept a steady pace with her father by her side.
As Hermione walked she noticed the holly and mistletoe that had been fastened to various fixtures. She hadn’t asked for the church to be decorated; she thought that, as the ceremony was on Christmas Eve, they would have their own decorations up and did not want them to be taken down. Hermione didn’t mind it though; they went quite well with the theme of the wedding.
Somehow Sirius had managed to stay looking forward until Hermione reached the altar, and when he turned to face her he looked stunned for a moment before mouthing ‘you look beautiful’ to her.
Once the music stopped the congregation sat down.
“Ladies and gentlemen, we are gathered here to witness the joining of Sirius Orion Black and Hermione Jean Granger in holy matrimony. Who gives this woman to this man?” the Minister of the Church asked.
“I do,” Hermione’s father said, placing her hand in Sirius’s and sitting back down.
“Our only reading today is from Corinthians 1:13. Love is patient, love is kind,” the minister read, “It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails,” he paused before continuing.
“Sirius, do you in the presence of family and friends, declare your love for and commitment to Hermione, choosing her as your life partner and soulmate? Do you freely offer yourself to her and willingly accept the gift of self she offers to you?
“I do,” Sirius said looking into her eyes.
“Hermione, do you in the presence of family and friends, declare your love for and commitment to Sirius, choosing him as your life partner and soulmate? Do you freely offer yourself to him and willingly accept the gift of self he offers to you?
“I do,” Hermione replied tearfully.
“We will now move onto the vows. Does anyone know of a reason why these two souls should not be joined as one in matrimony?”
Silence greeted his words and Hermione let out a breath she didn’t know she had been holding.
“Sirius and Hermione have chosen to recite their own vows. You may go first, Sirius.”
“I never thought I would ever find someone who would love and accept me for who I am, but you came along and proved me wrong. You have always known who I was and what I’ve been through, and it never phased you. I will always love you, Hermione,” Sirius said looking into her eyes, his voice thick with emotion.
The Minister then motioned for Hermione to start her vows.
“I have never met anyone who has made me feel the way you do. You have made me feel loved and cherished every single day we have been together, and I cannot wait to spend the rest of my life with you,” Hermione said as tears spilled down her cheeks.
“Sirius and Hermione have made their declarations and their vows to each other. Now it is time for the giving of the rings.”
For some reason Hermione didn’t find the exchanging of rings as emotional as the rest of the ceremony, and by the end of it her eyes were drier than before.
“Hermione and Sirius, you have heard the words about love and marriage, have exchanged your vows and made your promises, and celebrated your union with the giving and receiving of rings.
“It is at this time that I pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride!”
Sirius stepped forward and kissed her deeply, but pulled away before it got too intense.
“I now present to you Mr and Mrs Black!”
Sirius and Hermione turned to their friends who were cheering.
Hermione had never felt happier, and she was overjoyed that her friends and family were able to share this day with them.
Their relationship hadn’t been easy, but they had worked at it and Hermione was glad that they did. She loved him more and more each day and couldn't wait to tell him that there soon would be three of them.
