“Thanks for meeting me for ice cream,” Katie said, smiling at Marcus from across the table. “Sorry, it was so last minute.”
“You sounded worried over the Floo, is everything okay?” Marcus asked.
Katie looked down at her ice cream. She poked at it with her spoon for a few moments, trying to figure out how she wanted to tell Marcus her news.
“Katie?” he pressed. “Babe, tell me what’s going on.”
She took a deep breath. “I don’t know how it happened… But I’m pregnant.” She looked at Marcus, taking her lower lip between her teeth as she waited for his response.
“We had sex,” he murmured, putting down his spoon.
“What?” Katie murmured, caught completely off-guard by his comment.
Marcus couldn’t resist grinning. “That’s how you got pregnant… You said you didn’t know how it happened, so I thought I’d tell you.”
Katie gave him a look that said she wasn’t amused.
“Katie, in all seriousness, I think that’s great news.”
“You do?” she asked in surprise.
“Well, yeah. I love you, Katie, and I want a future with you.” He reached across the table and took her hand. “Unexpected, yes, but I’m excited to join you on this new journey.”
Katie sniffled, tears pricking the corners of her eyes.
“Are you okay?”
“I was just so worried,” she admitted. “I wasn’t sure how you’d take it.”
Marcus leant across the table and pressed a kiss to her lips. “I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
Marcus grinned. “We’re gonna be parents.”
Katie touched her still-flat stomach. “Yeah, we are.”
Truthfully, she couldn’t be happier.
