Neville looked down at his Butterbeer, watching a bit of foam drip down the side. Charlie was picking at his food, and Neville shifted. He had the first date jitters, and the air between them was awkward… and Neville wanted to say something, anything…
I like the way you styled your hair tonight.
How have things on the reserve been?
That leather jacket looks good on you.

Instead, the words that fell out of his mouth were garbage. He didn’t know where it came from, or what possessed him to say them, but once spoken, he couldn’t take it back.
"Did you know that taco cat spelt backwards is still taco cat?”
Charlie looked up, a smile pulling at the corner of his lips as he quietly chuckled. “I… Uh, did not know that.”
Neville wanted to groan. “I… Sorry, forgot I said anything.”
“No, Nev, it was funny,” Charlie assured them.
Neville sat up a little straighter in his chair at the use of his shortened name. He liked the way it sounded on Charlie’s lips.
“I’m not good at this,” Neville admitted, gesturing between them. “I… I don’t usually go out. My only conversation is with plants, and they don’t usually talk back.”
Charlie let out a full laugh at that. “I’m surrounded by dragons all day, so I definitely feel that.”
Neville grinned. He lifted his Butterbeer and held it towards Charlie. “To awkward dates!” he toasted teasingly.
“The first of many,” Charlie countered, clinking his drink against Neville’s, an excited sparkle in his eye as he did so.
