Fourth of July

I've had this strange thought pestering me today... It seems as though we aren't quite celebrating our nation's birthday properly... Naturally, we spend it doing things we consider very "American"--wearing red, white and blue (How many bajillion other nations have red, white and blue for their colors also?), eating barbeque, for some, getting ( Read more... )

Because "what America stands for" has been stomped on, misinterpreted, and flushed down the drain. Besides, being a slob and blowing stuff up isn't un-American, per se!

On a more serious note, it's almost impossible to enforce such a holiday, seeing that it would basically mean overthrowing the government, or starting a revolution every 4th of July.

I'm not saying we enforce such a thing. I'm saying that each individual can choose to celebrate it however he or she wishes, and those of us who wish America to stand for something more than it currently seems to could celebrate it in such a way.

Well said. The common concept of patriotism in this country is so deluded; those who so proudly proclaim themselves patriots tend to be the furthest from truly patriotic ideals. They wave their flags and put stickers on their SUVs and fight for things that would make the founding fathers sick.
