I was trying to describe some colonial (American) era art to someone and described it as "primitive." Her eyes got all big and she started to say something, but then rethought it and was like, "Oh, the style." 'Degenerate' seems the same to me - a highfalutin' language got broken down by the common population, I think that's what 'to degenerate' means. It just has the unfortunate connotation of also meaning 'lewd.' I guess I just resent having words I like to use properly taken away from me by the PCers.

Use the word "vernacular" instead of "vulgar" and maybe you won't offend people.
