Pickpockets, both times. In Milan, apparently between getting the underground tickets and actually getting on the train, in Vienna just before getting off the tram (I even know who did it, but by the time I had realised my wallet was REALLY missing, she was gone).
In Italy, Simone found the wallet on the floor next to a staircase after we had checked all the dustbins at the underground station and found two other wallets in one of them. In Vienna, I had just reported the theft at one police station when an officer from the other station close to the university called me and said a woman had found the wallet under her car and handed it in.
I am now back to NOT using a rucksack. At least for a while.
The only time anyone tried with me was a bunch of lame early-teens boys in Durham, trying to open part of a large bag I had over my shoulder. Persistent little buggers, who never got a thing. I wonder now what would have happened if I'd actually turned around and spoken to them, told them to piss off.
I accidentally lost my wallet, by dropping it at a mall, when I was six or seven. A woman phoned my dad a few days later and gave it back. I also lost it in a theater (the Swan, in High Wycombe, methinks) when I was 14 or 15-and, months later, the police mailed it to my dad
