fog and meanderings

I drove home through fog today. It was very pretty, with the streetlights behind the trees casting shadows in the air. The same way the sun does, when it shines behind clouds. But really not something I want to drive through at 3 am ( Read more... )

::blinks:: Do you mind if I ask? What do you mean by 'doing gaskets'?

(And gotta say- as a engineer I use algebra *and* reading blueprints every day. Very useful skills to have!)

Basically washing and getting the burrs off the gaskets and packaging them.

I agree algebra is useful, I just wish the class would go farther than Order of Operations, which is what we're stuck on. I've passed calculus, going back to Algebra for Dummies is kinda boring.

So is blueprint reading, it's just the teacher started out with the notion that we all *already knew* how to read blueprints, and I don't very well. Well sort of. I can read easy blueprints.

Ah, the reason I was curious about gaskets is that I've done a lot of work with various types of seals, including gaskets. So I could see 'molding gaskets' or 'stamping gaskets' but 'doing gaskets' well, I figured it couldn't be anything especially outre!

Ouch! I would say so. I'm surprised they didn't excuse you.

I wish some of my fellow students (in a Java class I'm taking) were getting remedial algebra...they're completely confused by stuff like x,y coordinates that ought to be a no-brainer. And of course, the math isn't even the point of the class- the instructor just assumes that anyone taking a college-level computer class can handle high school math!

You'll catch on to the blueprints, I'm sure. Complicated blueprints are mostly just easy blueprints with more stuff on them. It's just getting used to the look of them, and learning how to translate the 2-D image to 3-D. Practice more than anything else.

I really should check my messages more than once a month.

"I'm surprised they didn't excuse you."

Oh, but they did. I got out of the first year class. This is second year stuff, and it's just like your Java class, the other students really should be able to pass high school algebra by now. *sigh* On the up side we just got back a test and the teacher said he uses my tests/homework for an answer sheet, because I always have everything correct. Go me!

I'm sure I'll catch on to blueprints too. It's just that they're starting from a higher level than I'm on. I don't have the practice everyone else has.

Ah well. Practice makes perfect.
