Have you read Lawrence Kramer's book on Schubert's lieder, by any chance? He has some very interesting readings (especially of Die Forelle, which had something to do with mermaids and gay Viennese subcultures, IIRC). I remember not always agreeing with his interpretations, but it would be fun to look at at again--especially after AGoS!

In other news, Moriarty is one creepy dude. And, given what we see of his imagination, I could totally picture him mentally going through each and every one of these...er, sources of inspiration. I wonder if he sits around imagining music-themed deaths for all his enemies...and Moran when he complains about pigeons...and the annoying guy in the office next door who complains that the music is too loud.

I'm afraid the only book on music I've read is "The Stories of the Great Operas." I believe I was the only person to ever check it out of our high school library. As far as goes, I understood that the original poem was a warning to young ladies about men. Unless he was talking about changes Schubert made... It still sounds like a stretch, but... Schubert did change Erlkronig to be the Erlking beckoning the boy rather than the Erlking's daughter (as it was in the original). *shrug* I like that song anyway and I want to use it in another fic or two...

There is no way Moriarty, however genius he might be, could have thought up that meat hook thing while Holmes was unconscious. That thing was staged.

...am tempted to prompt crack fic about Moriarty: Defender of Pigeons, reaping vengeance on those who pick on his winged friend's...

Kramer is very much into interpretations of music based on other historical and theoretical factors, so he's very much a YMMV type of scholar.

And I will second anything featuring Moriarty and pigeons.

Well, I'm just happy to expand my classical music collection. Nikolai Lugansky taught me to love Rachmaninoff and Jared Harris & Hans Zimmer (Die Forelle was his choice) taught me to love Schubert. Wonder who'll inspire me next...

Hmm... May prompt later...

Ooh I love this. I've never heard these other songs but now I want to look them up and listen to them.

Thank you. I didn't know before about the sheer volume of songs Schubert wrote.

Loved it. (Especially the bonus. Oh, what a fun little bonus it was.)

BTW, I'm sure I'm belated but I believe a happy birthday is in order? If it's true, then HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

If not, then HAPPY UN-BIRTHDAY!!!

Either way you win a shout :)

Thank you very much.

You got the b-day wishes in under the wire for my current time zone and in plenty of time for my birthplace's time zone. Thanks!

This is just fantastic. Moriarty and even more Schubert than in AGoS.

Moriarty admiring himself in the mirror as he sings along to Holmes' torture is one of the most chilling scenes I have seen in a film for some time.

I love how you've taken that further with this, and the bonus really *is* a fab bonus!

Thank you very much!

Yes, Jared Harris may have made the scariest, most sadistic Moriarty ever. And I love him for it!

Bonus was tabby_stardust's idea, but thank you.

Thanks! I should be worried about the affinity I seem to have with him.

You're welcome! *smooches back*

And maybe you really do, because there's more M/H porn coming right now! =D

MORE PORN?! *dies*

:D

And by the way, I am tormenting Holmes some more in Photoshop right now. (No Moriarty, but I am certain he is responsible for Holmes' current predicament...)
